Introducing Students to Automotive Careers in Winchester

March 26th 2026 | Winchester, Virginia: Sometimes all it takes is seeing it firsthand. That was the case when 30 students from John Handley High School visited Tri-State Nissan for a behind-the-scenes tour of the dealership. What started as a simple visit quickly turned into a deeper understanding of how many opportunities exist within the automotive industry. Instead of focusing on just one role, students were introduced to the full operation.
Exploring Automotive Careers in Winchester VA for Students
During the visit, students toured every major department, including Service, Parts, Detail, Sales, Finance, and the administrative office. At each stop, they learned how the department operates and how it contributes to the overall success of the dealership. More importantly, they began to see how each role connects. Rather than viewing the dealership as a single job, students gained insight into a complete ecosystem where each department supports the other. Because of this, the experience helped break down common misconceptions about careers in the automotive field.
Understanding How Departments Work Together
Throughout the tour, leadership from across the dealership played a key role in guiding the experience. Ed Sullivan, Fixed Operations Director, and Greg Strosnider, Used Car Director, helped lead the visit and provided valuable insight into how different areas of the business function. Students were also introduced to Service Manager Mike Neumann, Parts Manager Stebbins Miller, and Sales Manager Tony Bates. Each shared perspective on their role and what it takes to succeed in their department. As a result, students were able to hear directly from professionals who work in these roles every day.
High Engagement and Real Curiosity
What stood out most during the visit was the level of engagement. Students asked thoughtful questions, stayed involved throughout the tour, and showed genuine interest in learning more. In addition, many were surprised by how many different career paths exist within a single dealership. This reaction is exactly what experiences like this are designed to create. According to one team member:
“Most students come in thinking about one type of job, but by the end, they realize there are opportunities in so many different areas. That’s when you can see their perspective start to change.”
Because of this, the visit became more than just informational—it became eye-opening.
Opening Doors to Future Opportunities
One of the biggest takeaways from the day was awareness. Students left with a better understanding of the variety of careers available, from technical roles in service to customer-facing positions in sales and support roles in administration. As a result, many began to think differently about what their future could look like. At the same time, the experience helped build a stronger connection between the dealership and the school.
Strengthening Relationships with Local Schools
Experiences like this reflect a continued commitment to the local community. By working with schools like John Handley High School, opportunities are created that go beyond the classroom. This approach aligns closely with the core values of Community and Relationships. Building these connections allows students to explore real-world career paths while also helping businesses invest in the future workforce.
Looking Ahead
While this was just one visit, the impact was clear. Students left with a new perspective. They saw opportunities they may not have considered before. More importantly, they gained a better understanding of how different career paths come together in a real working environment. Because sometimes, all it takes is one experience to open the door to a future opportunity.
